Dust Settles at Baja 1000 – Reflections on the World’s Toughest Race

Andy McMillin, Larry Roeseler, Pat O’Keefe and Tyler McQuarrie Race Recaps and Interviews for “DUST2GLORY”

Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico – The season finale of the four-race 2016 SCORE World Desert Championship ended Sunday, November 20, with overall winners Rob MacCachren and Jason Voss in the spotlight, defeating 270 starters in cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads. Among 31 starters in the SCORE Trophy Truck division, Safecraft’s Andy McMillin and Larry Roeseler in Trophy Truck No. 31, placed seventh in class and seventh overall four-wheel to finish, while Tyler McQuarrie and Pat O’Keefe pushed Truck No. 20 to the limit by running NeXgen Fuel’s NEXDIESEL Renewable Diesel—the first time in racing history – in a new V6 Ecodiesel engine.

This year’s SCORE World Desert Championship was a loop race that started and finished in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, 65 miles south of the U.S. Border at San Diego. Through a beautiful and often treacherous desert landscape, over boulders or miles of dirt coupled with extreme temperatures, drivers are mentally and physically challenged as they race across vehicle-destroying terrain. The Baja 1000 is truly one of the world’s toughest and grueling races known to man. It is an experience like no other, which has captivated award-winning documentary filmmaker Dana Brown in the latest film, due out mid-2017, entitled “Dust2Glory.” The documentary is a sequel which chronicles all four races in the 2016 SCORE Desert Championship featuring interviews with Andy McMillin, Larry Roeseler, Pat O’Keefe and Tyler McQuarrie.

Here’s a post-race recap:

ANDY McMILLIN: “At race mile 122 in the wash area, I took the wrong line where I hadn’t pre-run and I hit a big rock and tore out the drive shaft. I ended up putting a hole in the bottom of the transmission oil pan. We had to bring in a transmission and we got moving again after about an hour.”

LARRY ROESELER: “Finishing the SCORE Baja 1000 is a huge accomplishment for everybody. You never really conquer Baja. You maybe win a few and maybe finish a few but it is a tough race. We were battling the dust and after the sun went down there wasn’t any wind so that made it really tough trying to come through the traffic. When you come off the hills and see the lights of Ensenada it is a great feeling.”

PAT O’KEEFE: “I was finally able to fulfill a life-long dream, which was to race in the Baja 1000. I drove the start until road mile 210 with no issues. The experience is something I will never forget. It was a bittersweet race for me as we did not get the finish the truck deserved but that is Baja. There was so much work put into the building of this truck and it was only completed a few days before the race. The truck had less than 100 miles of testing on it prior to the start, so the fact that it ran flawlessly is a true testament to the team of builders. We identified some changes that need to be made to make it even more competitive but the durability of the V6 Ecodiesel engine and the fuel economy exceeded our expectations. We will be back stronger next race.”

TYLER MCQUARRIE: “This was my first Baja 1000 and it was truly life changing! I’ve always heard how Baja is the ultimate challenge and I can now say with experience that statement is 100% true! I got in the NeXgen Trophy truck at mile 210 and I got into a groove and everything was going to plan. Around mile marker 355 we lost the Steering Servo and we had to drive 20 miles with no power steering to our closest pit. It took about an hour to fix and we were on our way. At mile marker 410 we got into a complete “dust out” with zero visibility which resulted in us ending up in a big ditch and this ultimately ended our race. We may have not finished our first Baja 1000 but we gained a massive amount of experience and knowledge that we will carry onto the next race!”

The 2016 SCORE Baja 1000 is scheduled to be televised in a 2-hour special on the CBS Network on Sunday, December 25, 9 pm ET. (Subject to change, check local listings)

“Dust2Glory” is scheduled for release mid-2017.

NEXDIESEL the ‘Clear Alternative’ for Municipal Fleets

Sonoma, CA— Over 150 fleet managers, vendors and members of the Municipal Equipment Maintenance Association (MEMA) in Northern California gathered at the Sonoma Raceway to learn more about NEXDIESEL Renewable Diesel from NeXgen Fuel’s Pat O’Keefe, and to attend other educational presentations focused on alternative-fuel technologies.

The day-long fleet event, hosted by MEMA, in partnership with the East Bay and Sacramento Clean Cities Coalitions, included a presentation entitled “NEXDIESEL: The Clear Alternative” in which NeXgen Fuel’s President and CEO Pat O’Keefe outlined the major differences between Renewable Diesel and Biodiesel as a “drop-in” fuel that instantly turns fleets “GREEN.”

“The most important fact to remember is that NEXDIESEL meets ASTM D975 diesel specs, which essentially means that NEXDIESEL Renewable Diesel is exactly the type of fuel diesel engine manufacturers recommend,” explained O’Keefe. “So there’s no need for engine modifications and NEXDIESEL Renewable Diesel, which is clear in color, can be used immediately as a ‘drop-in’ fuel without voiding manufacturer’s warranties.”

NexGen-Fuel-2016-MEMA-Sonona-Raceway
In addition, NEXDIESEL Renewable Diesel “… goes in clean and comes out clean,” drastically reducing green house gas emissions by 50% or more as the City and County of San Francisco, County of Alameda and Cities of Oakland and Walnut Creek are finding after making the switch to NEXDIESEL Renewable Diesel in their municipal fleets and transit systems.

As an added bonus, NeXgen Fuel’s street-legal SLC Superlite race car, which was driven across the US from Florida to California on ONE TANK of NEXDIESEL Renewable Diesel, highlighted the potential performance capabilities of Renewable Diesel and was on hand for photo opportunities.

The Next Big School Bus Alternative Fuel Is…Diesel?

Article originally posted by School Transportation News at STOnline.com. Article written by Ryan Gray.

Attention, all school bus operators who bristle at the thought of transitioning from diesel power to alternative fuels, there is relief on the horizon.

Renewable Diesel (RD), which is available in parts of California, is turning heads, as it promises to deliver, at the very least, the same fuel economy and performance of ultra low sulfur diesel. CAL-START, in a recent webinar, claimed that RD also reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 65 to 90 percent.

Pat O’Keefe, CEO and president of NexGen Fuel, a subsidiary of Golden Gate Petroleum, said that such a reduction in GHG is a “huge benefit” for a drop-in fuel. That means RD meets the same ASTM D975 standard for ULSD and engine manufacturer requirements.

Renewable Diesel is similar to biodiesel in that it’s derived from waste vegetable oils and waste animal fats, but the similarities stop there. Unlike biodiesel, RD doesn’t have the same cold weather issues since RD doesn’t gel, having a cloud point of -20 degrees.

They also differ in how they are made, with RD refined from biomass through various processes, such as hydro-treating, thermal conversion and biomass-to-liquid. Biodiesel, on the other hand, is produced using feed stock in a process called transesterification.

Additionally, O’Keefe said that RD reduces particulate matter by a third, along with its ability be used in all modern diesel engines without any need of modifications.

So far, the only school district using RD is San Jose Unified, which is located south of San Francisco. Andrew DeBolt, lead equipment mechanic for San Jose Unified, told School Transportation News that the district is in the process of transitioning its entire fleet of 72 buses to RD with plans to only purchase diesel buses in the future.

Nearby in Oakland, the municipal fleet is the first to adopt RD. Fleet Director Richard Battersby, who will present on the benefits of RD at next month’s STN EXPO, said that operators don’t need to flush existing fuel tanks to use the renewable fuel. He added that it is a little more expensive than traditional diesel at an increase of about 10 cents per gallon, and availability is still an issue.

But Battersby said that he expects the reduced soot emissions to improve performance of DPFs and the affect on his operation’s bottom line to be worth it.

“We expect in the long run to lower maintenance costs,” said Battersby.

He also pointed to RD’s higher cetane number of 75 to 90. In comparison, petroleum diesel has a cetane number of 40 to 55, while biodiesel ranges from 50 to 65.

Join Pat O’Keefe and his CLP Motorsports team as they overcome challenges from cold temperatures and rainy conditions to clenching the first place win in class. Airs May 3, MAVTV, 3 pm PST. Check local cable and satellite listings. (DishNetwork 248, DirecTV 214, Verizon 810, TimeWarner Cable 151) Catch a glimpse here.

“Survive the 25” highlights the triumphs and struggles of teams vying for victory. For the win, CLP team drivers took turns behind the wheel of CLP Motorsports’ #6 NP01 on the 3-mile Thunderhill Raceway road course. The drivers completed a total of 514 laps, consistently putting the car in the top 5 to 6 fastest cars on the track. The NP01 was driven for a total of 1,542 miles, making 8,224 gear changes. Next year, the Team will be running a Daytona Prototype on NEXDIESEL renewable diesel for even better engine-performance results.

“The NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill presented by Hawk Performance is the most grueling test of man and machine in the country,” said Jeremy Croiset, NASA’s Director of Business Development and NP01 project lead. “It’s an ambitious feat for anyone to enter this event, but the CLP Motorsports team did so with a car they received from the factory just two weeks prior to the event with limited spares and a great game plan going in. Patrick O’Keefe, NeXgen Fuel CEO and CLP Motorsports Team Owner, called me a few months back with the crazy idea of trying to take on this race with the new car. He put together a very talented group of individuals and I was honored to be included on the team for this challenge. They not only showed they were one of the top teams to contend with in this ultra-competitive field, but also proved the racing pedigree emanating from Elan’s heritage flows deeply through the veins of this new machine finishing.”

“I couldn’t be happier with our team’s performance at this year’s 25 Hour of Thunderhill. This was our first 25-Hour and the NP01’s first race. We took on the challenge to prep the NP01 and had only two weeks to get ready for one of the most grueling and longest races in the country. Our team at CLP Motorsports are very fortunate to surround ourselves with experienced 25 Hour crew and drivers to create a winning team. We will be back next year for sure – bigger, better and running NEXDIESEL renewable diesel.”

– Pat O’Keefe, NeXgen Fuel CEO and CLP Motorsports Team Owner
